Let's talk about one of the most important yet often overlooked pieces of equipment in the chemical industry: the Drum Flaker (also known as Rotary Drum Flaker or Cooling Drum Solidifier).
In simple terms, a drum flaker is a continuous solidification machine that transforms hot molten liquids (with melting points from 40°C up to over 300°C) into uniform, easy-to-handle solid flakes.
Here's how it works:
1. The molten product (e.g. molten caustic soda, stearic acid, resin, wax, sulfur, phthalic anhydride, PEG, calcium chloride, etc.) is fed onto the outer surface of a large, slowly rotating, internally cooled drum.
2. As the drum turns, the thin layer of liquid quickly loses heat to the cold drum surface and solidifies within seconds.
3. After almost one full rotation, a stationary scraper blade (knife) gently removes the solidified layer, which naturally breaks into consistent flakes.
4. The flakes are then collected, conveyed, and packaged — ready for storage, transport, or downstream processing.
It's a beautifully simple yet highly efficient continuous process: no batch interruptions, minimal dust compared to crushing methods, and excellent control over flake thickness and quality by adjusting drum speed, film thickness, and cooling temperature.
1. Continuous & high capacity — from a few hundred kg/h to several tons per hour
2. Uniform flake quality — consistent thickness, good flowability, low fines/dust
3. Energy efficient cooling — uses chilled water, brine, or glycol inside the drum
4. Versatile — handles everything from low-viscosity liquids to sticky, super-cooling, or highly corrosive melts
5. Compact footprint — saves valuable factory space compared to belt flakers or pastillators
6. Safe & clean — can be designed as open, dust-tight, or fully enclosed with inert gas protection for toxic or odorous products
You'll find drum flakers widely used in chlor-alkali plants (caustic soda flakes), oleochemicals (fatty acids, stearates), resin & wax production, pharmaceutical intermediates, food additives, sulfur solidification, and many fine chemical processes.
At Huatao Group, we engineer and manufacture high-performance drum flakers with modern upgrades:
1. Mirror-polished, high-efficiency drums (carbon steel, stainless steel 316L, or chrome-plated) for superior heat transfer
2. Quick-change, durable scraper blades tailored to your material (alloy, food-grade, or corrosion-resistant)
3. Flexible feeding systems — dip tray, applicator roll, or top distribution — optimized for different viscosities and melting points
4. Single or double drum configurations, diameters from 800mm to 2500mm+, fully customizable
5. Robust, low-vibration design with easy maintenance and full spare parts support
Many plants that switched to Huatao drum flakers report smoother operation, better flake consistency, lower energy use, and significantly reduced maintenance headaches.
If you're producing or planning to solidify any molten chemical product and want to understand whether a drum flaker is the right choice for your process — or if you're simply curious about how to improve your current solidification line — we'd love to hear from you.
