The Applicator Roll sits at the point in a thermoset prepreg line where resin first meets the web. Its job is deceptively simple — pick up resin from the coating system and transfer a controlled, uniform layer onto the reinforcement material or transfer film — but the outcome governs stable resin distribution, accurate resin content, and consistent prepreg quality.
Where it fits in the hot melt process. Molten epoxy resin is supplied to the coating section, where the Applicator Roller picks it up and transfers it evenly to release paper, carrier film, or directly to the fiber reinforcement. Paired with the Metering Roll, it regulates resin thickness and holds the target resin content consistently across the entire product width. The two rollers divide the work: the Applicator Roller delivers resin, the Metering Roll decides how much stays.
Why prepreg applicator rolls are different. Standard industrial coating rollers are not built for this duty. Prepreg applicator rolls require extremely high machining precision, excellent concentricity, and optimized surface properties. Even slight variation in roller geometry or surface finish translates into uneven resin coating, thickness variation, or excessive resin consumption — defects that propagate through impregnation and into the final laminate.
How we build them. Our Applicator Rolls are manufactured using advanced CNC machining, precision grinding, and dynamic balancing technology. Each roller undergoes strict quality inspection to verify low runout, excellent roundness, and stable operation under continuous high-speed production conditions.
Surface engineering for different resin systems. To accommodate different resin systems and processing requirements, a variety of surface treatments are available: hard chrome plating, ceramic coating, tungsten carbide coating, PTFE non-stick coating, and DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coating. These options improve resin transfer efficiency, reduce resin build-up, simplify cleaning, and extend service life.
Designed for demanding composite manufacturing environments, our Applicator Rollers are widely used in carbon fiber prepreg production, glass fiber prepreg lines, aerospace composite materials, automotive lightweight components, wind energy composites, sporting goods, and other advanced composite applications.

Q1. What does the Applicator Roller do in a prepreg line?
It picks up resin from the coating system and transfers a controlled, uniform layer onto release paper, carrier film, or fiber reinforcement. Together with the Metering Roll, it determines resin content and coating uniformity across the full product width.
Q2. How is the Applicator Roller different from the Metering Roll?
The Applicator Roller delivers resin to the web; the Metering Roll regulates how much resin remains. They work as a pair — one handles transfer, the other handles thickness control.
Q3. Why can't a standard industrial coating roller be used?
Prepreg applicator rollers require much higher machining precision, concentricity, and surface quality. Small geometry or finish deviations cause uneven coating, thickness variation, and excess resin consumption that a standard roller cannot control.
Q4. Which surface treatments are available?
Mirror polishing, hard chrome plating, ceramic coating, tungsten carbide coating, PTFE non-stick coating, and DLC coating — selected according to resin system and release requirements.
Q5. Can the roller be customized for our production line?
Yes. We customize roller diameter, face length, shaft configuration, surface finish, coating, heating or cooling options, bearing assembly, and installation dimensions for both new equipment and retrofit projects.
